19th August 2016
Windsurfing: Point Clear
Wind Direction: WSW
Wind Stength: 20/35
Surf / Sea State: choppy/rough
Air Temperature: cool
Sea Temperature: OK
Weather: mild
Max Speed: 9.3 (knots - unless stated otherwise)
Distance Covered: 28.44 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)

After driving probably triple the normal miles to sail, I don't think I should have bothered because unlike most windsurfers I hate high winds. Visited 2 sites at Felixstowe the sea looked hard work and the wind measured 25kts gusting + and sea was rough. Wave heads were out at both Manor and Dip but with high tide approaching, it was def out of my league. After wasting 2 hours and 25 miles went to Point clear another hours drive. There the sun had gone, it was cold and Keith F had just snapped his mast with 7M sail. He rigged 6M which still looked too big and Ian went out on 4M. I waited for some more Guinea pigs but none arrived. Craig had 5m but landed after I had just rigged. Rigged 5.7 / 111L JP Magic ride pro and struggled towards the lagoon, thinking wrong size. Within 10 minutes it was the wrong size alright, should have been 4.7! I had a horrendous time trying to sail and the gusts always came when I tried to gybe. Gybe after gybe was a wipe-out as I beared off. In the end I just sail from one land point to the other. I didn't even attempt a speed run even though that's the reason I went to PC. The lagoon was choppy to make matters worst and watching where others sailed to avoid the vicious chop did help. Spent 20 minutes trying to get more downhaul as the ratchet had no room left. Wipe out twice big time following kiters in the shallows, which cured my knee probs, which was remarkable. My knee is great as I landed heavily on my back wearing a float coat.
Watched Dave White made the conditions looked easy doing double duck gybes + some other trick whilst sailing flat out in the gybes. Mileage was low 9.3 nm as I sat out the gusts. Decided I would just test out the sea side of the lagoon, just to say I had but within 10 secs I knew I was in the pooh, so hammered back on to the island grounding then walked back into the lagoon. Was I enjoying myself? nope, as it was too far and too much hassle to get back to the far car park and rig 4.7m. Best speed was 28.44kts close reaching as I dare not bear off. In the end gave up early and was very relieved to see the land, after going downwind in the open bit of the lagoon with some wicked chop. Def learning curve with the board, which was nice. I used my fav 42cm upright fin, which was way too big, use the 38 next time, and too much downhaul is as bad a not enough, the sail was a pig, and only use wave sails with high cut bottoms to the clew, to stop tripping on gybes.
Saw a kiter jump over another high flying kite! Brilliant! and a couple of windsurfers doing tricks too complex to describe. Finally the sail blew out of my grip from the wall, (had just pulled it off the mast) went up in the heavens and landed in the caravan park bounce on a roof and landed next to the owners car! There was no damage to his car or my sail and I had to walk round to meet a fuming caravan owner who was having his meal when he heard a loud bang on his roof! That's def 4 star luck!
